May 2009 - In keeping with the theme of this year’s conference, At The Helm of Technology, we are pleased to have Ken Read as one of our keynote speakers.
Ken is one of the world’s most accomplished and celebrated sailors. He was named "United States Rolex Yachtsman of the Year" twice (1985, 1994) and has over 40 World, North American, and National Championships to his credit in a variety of classes including the J/24 and Etchells 22.
While sailing at Boston University Read was named the 1982 ICSA College Sailor of the Year winning the Everett B. Morris Trophy. Additionally, Read was a three-time Collegiate All American (1981, 82, 83) and is a member of the BU Hall of Fame.
Read was helmsman onboard two of Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes America’s Cup campaigns (2000, 2003). He also served as strategist and coach with America’s Cup entry Young America in 1995.
This Newport, Rhode Island native began racking up the offshore miles when he joined the Ericsson Racing Team for the last four legs of the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race.
Currently, Read is skipper of Puma Racing Team’s il Mostro in the 2008-2009 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race (http://www.volvooceanrace.org/), his first complete circumnavigation. During the nine months of the 2008-09 Volvo, which starts in Alicante, Spain in October 2008 and concludes in St Petersburg, Russia, during late June 2009, the teams will sail over 37,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao, around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm. Read is taking a sabbatical from his everyday commitments as husband to Kathy, father to Victoria and Vice President of sail making company, North Sails North America, to run PUMA Ocean Racing. Ken's collegiate athletic experience, corporate experience as VP of North Sails North America, and most recently as skipper of il Mostro provides for a broad range of experience that certainly takes advantage of the benefits of technology. Ken will relate his know-how as a leader and team builder in difficult situations by sharing some fascinating 'sea stories' from the Volvo Ocean Race.

April 2009 - GMIS is once again pleased to announce that Thomas A. Cellucci, PhD, MBA, Chief Commercialization Officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is to be a keynote speaker at the GMIS 2009 conference, once again demonstrating that our goal is to provide a high-level, quality experience for attendees and exhibitors.
Dr. Cellucci accepted a five-year appointment from the Department of Homeland Security in August 2007 as the Federal Government’s first Chief Commercialization Officer (CCO). He is responsible for initiatives that identify, evaluate and commercialize technology for the specific goal of rapidly developing and deploying products and services that meet the specific operational requirements of the Department of Homeland Security’s Operating Components and other DHS stakeholders such as First Responders and Critical Infrastructure/Key Resources owners and operators. Cellucci has also developed and continues to drive the implementation of DHS-S&T’s outreach with the private sector to establish and foster mutually beneficial working relationships to facilitate cost-effective and efficient product/service development efforts. His efforts led to the establishment of the DHS-S&T Commercialization Office in October 2008. The Commercialization Office is responsible for four major activities; a requirements development initiative for all DHS stakeholders, the development and implementation of a commercialization process for DHS, development and execution of private sector partnership programs such as SECURE and leading the private sector outreach for the S&T directorate.
Since his appointment, he has published three comprehensive guides [Requirements Development Guide (April 2008), Developing Operational Requirements (May 2008), and Developing Operational Requirements, Version 2 (November 2008)] dealing with the development of operational requirements, developed and implemented a commercialization model for the entire department and established the SECURE Program—an innovative public-private partnership to cost-effectively and efficiently develop products and services for DHS’s Operating Components and other DHS stakeholders. In addition, he has written over 25 articles and a compilation of works [Harnessing the Valuable Experiences and Resources of the Private Sector for the Public Good, (February 2009)] geared toward the private sector to inform the public of new opportunities and ways to work with DHS. Cellucci has received recognition for his outreach efforts and engagement with the small and disadvantaged business communities who learn about potential business opportunities and avenues to provide DHS with critical technologies and products to help secure America.
Cellucci is an accomplished entrepreneur, seasoned senior executive and Board member possessing extensive corporate and VC experience across a number of worldwide industries. Profitably growing high technology firms at the start-up, mid-range and large corporate level has been his trademark. He has authored or co-authored over 139 articles on Requirements development, Commercialization, Nanotechnology, Laser physics, Photonics, Environmental disturbance control, MEMS test and measurement, and Mistake-proofing enterprise software.
He has also held the rank of Lecturer or Professor at institutions like Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania and Camden Community College. Cellucci also co-authored ANSI Standard Z136.5 "The Safe Use of Lasers in Educational Institutions". Dr. Cellucci is also a commissioned Admiral and Commander of a Squadron in Texas responsible for civil defense and has been a first responder for over twenty years.
As a result of his consistent achievement in the commercialization of technologies, Cellucci has received numerous awards and citations from industry, government and business. In addition, he has significant experience interacting with high ranking members of the United States government—including the White House, US Senate and US House of Representatives—having provided executive briefs to three Presidents of the United States and ranking members of Congress. Cellucci represents DHS as the first Federal Government member on the U.S. Council on Competitiveness.
Cellucci earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from Rutgers University and a BS in Chemistry from Fordham University. He has also attended and lectured at executive programs at the Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School, Kellogg School and others. Dr. Cellucci is regarded as an authority in rapid time-to-market new product development and is regularly asked to serve as keynote speaker at both business and technical events.

February 2009 - GMIS is delighted to announce that Howard Charney, Senior Vice President at CISCO, is to be our closing keynote speaker, and we believe that GMIS 2009 will be providing a special and unique forum for attendees and exhibitors.
Senior Vice President Howard Charney is a member of Cisco’s Office of the President and Executive Staff and reports directly to CEO John Chambers. He contributes to Cisco’s strategy and direction and advises customers on implementing critical Internet technologies to improve productivity and competitiveness. He is the company’s Executive Sponsor for the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
During more than 30 years in Silicon Valley, Charney has overseen the development and proliferation of key technologies that led directly to the global build-out of the Internet. After joining Cisco with the acquisition of Grand Junction Networks, he helped grow Cisco’s new two-tier distribution business to more than US$2.4 billion and, with Cisco’s brand and market momentum, helped turn Fast Ethernet and low-cost switching into fundamental, global Internet technologies.
Previously, Charney founded Grand Junction Networks in 1992. Grand Junction invented Fast Ethernet and low-cost switching, which transformed the economics of switching. In 1980 Charney cofounded 3Com, the progenitor of Ethernet and local area networking. 3Com’s breakthrough technologies enabled Internet access to the desktop.
A licensed patent attorney, Charney belongs to the State Bar of California and the Federal Bar. He sits on the boards of several technology companies and on the advisory board for the Center for Science, Technology and Society at Santa Clara University. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and master’s of business administration and juris doctor degrees from Santa Clara University.
